Saving Money On Diesel Fuel With Six Small Steps
Truck owners all over the country,
in an attempt to deal with the rising cost of diesel fuel, are doing their best
to lower the money spent during each of the road trip. For those who are new to
driving a big rig would find the following article helpful on the many ways to
save on diesel fuel and save some money in the process.
Check your tire pressure. Although it may seem quite a simple step, but in fact, it
can go a long way in lowering the fuel usage in fuel lube trucks by around 2%
with proper inflation of the tires. The factors that affect the tire pressure
are temperature, the road conditions, and the speed of driving. With improper
inflation of tires, the sidewalls of the tire come under undue pressure and
that could lead to blowing out of the tire easily. Hence, it makes sense to
make a weekly check of air pressure, and if that is not going to be so, do that
once a month.
Drive at night. As the ambient temperature affects the tire pressure, it
would be helpful to drive at night and help in keeping the tire inflated. Yet
another benefit of night driving is the presence of lighter traffic, which
requires less slow down and less stoppage in congested traffic.
Slow down. If you start using cruise control or own your own rig, it
would be wiser to install a governor. This is because by having an additional
mile per hour of speed over the usual speed limit of your travel, the miles per
gallon is reduced by 2%. The presence of a governor would prevent a trucker to
let their lead foot take over. Their driving speed would be limited as much as
the governor allows.
Give your rig a tune-up.
For those who are not servicing the
truck regularly, it would be wiser to do that now. Many mechanics recommend
scheduling a tune-up after every ten thousand miles of travel. Things that need
to be done during the tune-up process are to check the belt about the need for
adjustment, rotate the steering tires, check all the lights, verify if all the
gears are lubed well and checking the suspension on both ends.
Don't carry unnecessary weight. There are many things in the cab or sleeper of a truck that
are not necessary. By removal of these extra things from the truck, it is
possible to increase the amount of fuel that could remain in the tanks. Hence,
when 1.000 pounds are removed from the truck, there will be a 0.4% increase.
Reduce tractor-trailer gaps. Motorists of fuel lube trucks are cognizant of the fact that driving trucks close behind will
help them save gas. This will lead to a saving of fuel.
These are the five ways to save on diesel fuel.
Of course, you could come across some other ways of saving gas like not to keep
the truck running. By using these ideas, it is possible to save money and then
include others as well when you come across them.
